“I don’t know how you’re going to react,” he said to me.

I was sitting on the edge of his bed, watching as he disappeared into the closet. The sinking sun was casting fiery oranges over the floral comforter where I was sitting. My flight to Arizona landed two hours ago, and I was exhausted, but waiting anxiously for the birthday surprise he had made me.

“I went with my gut, and I made it anyway,” he said, stepping out of the closet.

He was holding a string of red yarn as tall as he was, with batches of paper attached all the way down it in arrays of bright colors and patterns.

“What is it?” I asked.

He brought it closer to me before laying it down on the bed.

“It’s origami,” he said. “Look, they’re all different animals.”

I watched his hands as he went to each different…
